Medical researchers compared the brains of people addicted to online games and drug addicts say the same parts of the brain are affected in both cases, a discovery that will come as little surprise to anyone familiar with the MMORPG.

The Korean research team used PET to examine brain activity and found that the "game addicts" have a high activity in areas such as the orbitofrontal cortex and caudate nucleus compared to non-gamers.

The comparisons between the brains of addicts MMORPG (pictured above right) and addicted to cocaine (left) revealed similar patterns of activity.

The researchers expressed hope that these results will lead to a recognition of MMORPG addiction as a medical condition:

"These research results show that addiction to online gaming requires specialized medical treatment like drug addiction does, and expect to be recognized as just as mental illness."
