or dumbed Educational Television?

or dumbed Educational Television?

the work to a dumbed-down society

TELEVISION: EDUCA O miseducate?

Television is an agent of socialization like the family, school or gang. Together with other media helps to shape the behavior and socialization of the child, so it can be for the development of such a brake or a promoter of change. In this situation, therefore, to encourage active and critical attitude against this environmental influence, we should consider whether or miseducate educational television.

On this dilemma, there are different views about the influence of this medium as controversial. Some authors, such as Quintana (1989), believe that television is a cause for concern and do not hesitate to impute much of the evils that exist in society (crisis of values, atrophy of the imagination, increased crime, aggression, violence ...). By contrast, others, like Gomez and Dominguez (1996), consider having educational opportunities and can be an effective tool against social decay.

However, there is another point of view, such as Murillo (1996), which is not as radical as the previous, ie it does not believe that television has neither beneficial nor harmful effect, but simply indifferent. In this sense, it is argued that human nature has a mechanism or level of acceptance that allows desimplicarse to what the media conveys.

In our opinion, television is positive or negative depending on the coordination between the programs offered to students in school and it can do at home, because while the former are chosen by the teacher, the latter to be variable, can negate the objectives pursued in the classroom if not properly selected.

Based on the foregoing, we believe it would be very beneficial addition to the work that educators can do, parents learn to select programs based on the evolutionary process of their children and have time to accompany them in the vision of those . Otherwise, it may be that the child does not develop a critical capacity compared to what is offered, adopting a passive attitude, ie "swallowing" all information that reaches it.

However, good coordination between these socializing agents (family and school) will make it possible to enhance the benefits that can be on TV. Thus, for example, will provide a common base of experience to those who watch a program at the same time, will bring the child to other people, places and events that are otherwise impossible to observe, will introduce students to more attractive educational objectives of a curriculum; contribute to the overall development and value formation of the person ...

Finally, we consider that, given the interest in television is very noticeable from the first years of life, is essential to take the programs that are available to the child from this age. In this way, whichever view you can educate, presenting educational programs with role models or, conversely, miseducate, highlighting violence and aggressive feelings.
