Europe closes its borders to the PS3

A Dutch judge bans the import of the Sony console all over the continent for a patent litigation with the firm LG

The legal war for months maintained that electronic companies Sony and LG, with several cross-complaints of violation of patents, has claimed its first victim: the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console from the Japanese giant star, whose import has been banned throughout Europe up to ascertain the last of the lawsuits filed by the South Korean firm. As revealed by the British newspaper "The Guardian", a judge in The Hague (Netherlands) has issued a preliminary hearing after an interim order for the EU customs authorities to intercept and confiscate all shipments of PS3 to reach the continent from Asia (the units are manufactured and assembled in both Japan and China).
This decision also affects the distribution of the consoles already stored on the docks of Rotterdam port and airport hangars at Schiphol (Amsterdam), the two doors of entry into Europe of Sony products. The legal measures have an initial term of ten days waiting for the judge to analyze more thoroughly the case and make a final decision. LG accuses Sony of infringing seven of its patents in the development of Blu-ray discs (high-definition video and high data storage density) that incorporate your PS3, thereby claiming the withdrawal of all models market and consequent compensation for those who have already been sold.
Spokesmen for Sony Spain yesterday avoided making any assessment of the news and quantify the impact that will have the border closing in the domestic market. According to British newspaper, the Japanese company could supply the cargo held in Holland with the stocks up in Germany (6,500 units) and the United Kingdom (10,000 units), even if the blockade continues there will come a time when the PS3 will disappear from shelves stores.
LG has filed a similar suit for the same reasons in the United States in early February. With this trial responded to the complaint that he had brought Sony later this year in Los Angeles for an alleged infringement of patents in a dozen mobile phones.
