The South Korean police said a couple whose son died three years of age due to malnutrition was addicted to a game on the Internet dedicated to caring for a virtual girl.

Police spokesman Chung Jin-won said that the couple had "lost the will to live after losing their jobs."

The game became a way to "escape reality", he added.

Authorities arrested the couple in the city of Suweon, south of Seoul, the capital, earlier in the week.

The son of detainees died five months ago and the autopsy showed cause of death as a long period of malnutrition.

After reporting the child's death the couple fled.

BBC correspondents indicate that in South Korea have been sporadically reported cases of deaths related to addiction to Internet games.

In one such case, a man aged 28 died after five days playing with few interruptions.
