Forecasters should join their efforts to prevent the "catastrophe solar
The next shot of solar activity, which should peak in 2013, requires the world community to take action so that magnetic storms do not become a catastrophe, U.S. meteorologists say.
According to the deputy head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration U.S., Kathryn Sullivan, the world depends increasingly on new technologies, and navigation systems, energy infrastructure and telecommunications, among others, are very vulnerable to solar storms.
"The last shot of solar activity was recorded in 2000. In 2013 it observed the peak of solar storms, "he said.
Sullivan said that to alleviate the negative effects of this phenomenon requires "global understanding" and a joint strategy. If any major solar storm could become a global catastrophe and lead the most serious economic consequences.
"I call on all members of the International Meteorological Organization to contribute to the monitoring of space weather," he added speaking at the congress of this organization.
The Earth's magnetic field disturbances due to solar plasma emissions, ionized particles, which affect Earth's magnetosphere and originate, for example, interference to radio communications.
Since 2000, on Earth there were 12 major magnetic storms that caused failure of energy systems and radio and polar auroras visible even in Ecuador. The last major magnetic storm occurred on September 11, 2005.
